I have to admit – I don’t recall this restaurant. But it definitely looks like it might have been my kind of place. I love diners! It certainly looks a lot more like a diner than a ‘fine food’ restaurant.
The location was 330 West Grand (now Sheridan). This places it across the street from the Hudson Hotel and Hotel Black and just a block west of the Biltmore Hotel. So I would assume those provided most of the clientele for the restaurant. It looks like there were rooms above, so local residents also probably ate there.
The Hudson and Black Hotels were built in the 1930’s so this restaurant is probably of the same vintage. I have a 1947 phone book and the Fine Foods Restaurant was listed then.
The Hudson Hotel, Biltmore Hotel and building housing the Fine Foods Restaurant were all destroyed during urban renewal during the 1970’s. Where the Fine Foods Restaurant was located is now part of the Myriad Gardens. The Hudson Hotel sat on the southwest corner of the new Devon Tower under construction. The Hotel Black building still exists.
